March 8 is a special day – International Women’s Day, when women around the world are celebrated for their achievements, but attention is also drawn to the challenges that still exist. International Women’s Day in Montenegro – a day full of appreciation
International Women’s Day is celebrated with great significance in Montenegro. It is not only a day of recognition here, but often also a very personal holiday on which women are given gifts and appreciated – whether by their partners, friends or work colleagues. Flowers, especially red carnations or roses, are traditionally included, but small gifts or joint activities with family and friends are also common.
Many employers in Montenegro take this day as an opportunity to give their employees a small gift – be it in the form of flowers, chocolate or even half a day off. Children in schools also make small gifts for their mothers, grandmothers and teachers.
A comparison: International Women’s Day in Montenegro and elsewhere
While International Women’s Day is more of a symbolic day of remembrance in some countries, such as Germany, and has only received more attention in recent years, it is more deeply rooted in society in Montenegro. Similar to Russia or the Balkan states, it is perceived as a real public holiday – comparable to Mother’s Day, but for all women.
In other parts of the world, such as the USA or Western Europe, the focus is more on feminist movements, protests and events to promote equality. In Montenegro, on the other hand, personal appreciation prevails: it is a day on which women are simply celebrated – for everything they are and everything they achieve.
